yesterday i was talking to mark about how i didn’t want to go to the island beerfest this year. we first went two years ago, and we went again last year. it was fun both times but the second time we went, all the beer samples were being served by women wearing those tacky, skimpy “sexy beer maiden” costumes that are too short to even cover their bums. of course i am all for everyone wearing whatever they want but it was obviously the required uniform and it made me really uncomfortable to hear and see men being really creepy towards the women serving beer. i told mark that the outfits were part of the reason i didn’t want to go, and he said “we should write a letter together to the island beer fest or the times colonist about that.” i was so surprised and delighted to hear him say that.
and a few days ago he said “i hesitate to call myself a male feminist because i don’t want to risk appropriating the struggles that women go through”
and i can hear my roommate and his girlfriend talking about heteronormativity in the kitchen as i write this
i just thought all those things were awesome.
